Village Agent News April 2010

Believe it or not I have been in my job as a Village Agent for one year this month!

Firstly let me say thank you to all of the people who have helped me settle in. I am really enjoying the role and am continually busy, but I can always find time for new people so if you think I can help ring me at any time.

The Digital Switchover has caused a mixed response, some people have not been affected and others are now unable to watch TV and are hoping the second phase of the switching off is more beneficial. The number to ring for enquiries is 08456 50 50 50.

I constantly come in to contact with people who are suffering from serious illnesses and living alone.

As a result they are very vulnerable and perhaps even worried about carrying out simple activities within the home in case of injury.

One way for this to be slightly relieved is to wear a LinkLine button which is connected to a call centre for emergencies within the home. There are various names for this service but the two main ones in our area are LinkLine and Telecare.

I recently visited the office in Coleford and found a friendly service that can be relied upon to give peace of mind and a feeling of safety both to the client and their family. For any information about this service telephone me and I will be happy to help.

Village Agent Update.
Urgent action needed by 24th March 2010

Many of you are probably aware the analogue transmitter is going to be switched off in the Points West area on 24th March 2010. This means that if you do not have digital or satellite you will no longer receive television programmes.

That is a scary thought for
many, particularly those who rely on the television to keep in touch with what is going on and for the company of others.

Some simple facts that I want everyone to know are these:

1.
If you receive Points West, BBC2 switches off on 24th March 2010.

2.  Three weeks later, 7th April 2010, the other channels are being turned off.

3.  If you are over 75 you are eligible for free help.

4.  If you receive Attendance Allowance or DLA you can get free help.

5.  If you are registered visually impaired or have been in a care home for six  months, you are also eligible for free help.

6.  You do not need a new TV, the oldest one that was adapted was from the 1930's.

7.  If your main TV is already digital ready what about the others in your home.

8.  If you are eligible for free help you can choose which TV is updated.

9.  You may need to retune your digibox after the analogue is switched off.

10. For any more help telephone 08456 50 50 50 for general information or 0800 40 85 900 for help scheme information.

This might not apply to you personally however, if you know of family, friends or neighbours that might be confused and have not changed then please pass on this information or contact me,

Your Village Hall needs Specialist Skills

The Village Hall has need of some specialist help. The small committee is coping with the day to day running of the hall, but they do need some extra help.

They would appreciate anyone would would like to help, but cannot be tied down with regular meetings.

If there is anybody that has specialist skills in fund raising, research, project management or any skill that would assist the committee, please contact Ann or John on 01594 562152 or email annhibberd440@btinternet.com. Click on the email address to send an email.

During 2010, the committee are hoping to focus on raising as much money as possible to continue the renovation programme that has made such a strong start.

There are many things that the committee would like to offer the village, but before that can happen, the hall needs to be brought fully up to specification.
