Striving for a Safer Gloucestershire

It has come to the attention of Gloucestershire Police that a “SCAM” letter has been sent to several homes in the Yorkley area.
This particular scam is based on the lottery with the heading “EUROMILLIONES”
The “company” claim to be based in Spain, and claim to have prize money put aside for you of the amount of 815,960 Euros.
The amount is the same on all letters sent. The money is said to be being held by a company called LEEDY WEST SECURITY.
This is where the main scam is, as they request your personal details.
They do not ask for bank details at this stage but should you send your details off, they request them to send your money.

IT IS A SCAM LETTER!!

Rules of thumb on these things are that if you never entered a Spanish lottery then you are not going to have won anything.
People do not pick numbers out for you randomly; they are only after your bank details.
Should you receive any letters like the one I have described above, please just put them in the bin and ignore it. Alternatively contact either myself or PCSO Neil Evans on tel no:101 and we will be glad to give you any advice we can on the matter.

New non-emergency telephone number for
Gloucestershire Police

In an emergency dial 999 or 112

999 should only be used in situations where:

Life is threatened
Someone is injured
You suspect a crime is being committed
You see something suspicious

Gloucestershire Constabulary receives over 67,000, 999 calls each year and aims to answer these emergency calls as quickly as possible. However, over 50% of 999 calls received are not emergencies.

One motorist rang 999 after locking himself out of his car.
Another person rang 999 to report a blocked sink.

In a non-emergency dial 101

When its less urgent than 999 ring 101

Gloucestershire Constabulary answers the majority of your calls at a county call centre. However, it will still be your local officers who respond to reported incidents.
Calls are taken at our call centre to offer the best possible service to you. Our operators will offer an immediate service or connect you to the most appropriate department to deal with your call.

Please note that our non-emergency number can only be used from within the United Kingdom as a direct dial number.
Callers from outside the United Kingdom will need to be connected via the international operator.

How to protect your home

We all want to feel safe and secure in our own homes and want to avoid an unwelcome visit from a burglar at all costs.
Home security covers a number of different areas but this guide outlines a few simple steps that might help to protect your home and deter would be thieves.

Outside the house

Consider installing a good quality burglar alarm to your property.
Use low level dusk to dawn lighting around the outside of your home.

Consider using prickly plants as boundaries; criminals do not like climbing through prickly plants and hedges.

Crunchy gravel driveways are a good deterrent as thieves do not like to be heard.

Don’t forget to protect your shed - install metal grills over windows, reinforce hinges and invest in a good lock.

Consider securing valuable items inside your shed or garage using security cables or chains with robust padlocks.

At the front of your property keep boundary fences and hedges low to allow as much natural surveillance as possible from neighbours, passing pedestrians and traffic.

The rear garden should have a secure boundary.

Secure garden furniture and ornaments with bolts or to a concrete base using metal pins and make sure they are security marked.

Expensive plants can be secured in the ground using wire and pegs around the root ball.

Inside the house

Most burglars enter property through insecure doors and windows so fit good bolts and locks to all doors and windows and
ALWAYS USE THEM
.

Use a timer device to make your house look like there is someone home.

Don’t leave valuables on display where they can easily be seen through a window, especially car keys.

Photograph items of jewellery, antiques and other items that may be difficult to describe.

Always back up home computer records on disc and store them safely in case the computer is stolen.

Mark valuable items with your postcode using an ultra violet marker or use a forensic marking kit. Property marked will be less attractive to the thief and easier to identify if stolen.

Consider purchasing a safe for storing valuables.
Don’t keep large amounts of cash at home.

Shred all receipts and utility bills to avoid criminals using your identity.
